Effectiveness of rehabilitation techniques on sensory function among neuro-critical patients

Gopalakrishnan N, Tamilarasi B, Padmavathi P and Gowri R

Neuro-critical patients often experience sensory dysfunction due to brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, or prolonged critical illness. Impaired sensory function affects recovery, motor performance, cognition, and overall quality of life. Early rehabilitation interventions aimed at sensory stimulation may enhance neurological recovery and functional outcomes. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of selected rehabilitation techniques on sensory function among neuro-critical patients. Quasi-experimental study was done among 60 purposively selected neuro-critical patients. The study group received structured sensory rehabilitation techniques including tactile, proprioceptive, auditory, visual, and olfactory stimulation for 20– 30 minutes daily over two weeks, in addition to routine care. The control group received routine care. Sensory function was assessed using a structured sensory assessment scale. The study group demonstrated a significant improvement in post-test sensory function scores compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Rehabilitation techniques were effective in enhancing tactile response, proprioceptive awareness, auditory responsiveness, and visual attention.
