Seizures and its first aid management among staff working in the utility service departments in a selected hospital: A descriptive research study

Background of the study: A seizure is an abnormal electrical discharge from the neurons in the brain that impaired normal function, and when the seizure is chronic and repeated for long duration known as epilepsy which is characterized by alteration in the level of consciousness, awareness, muscle control, movement, sensation, and behavior. Worldwide approximately 50 million people are affected by the epilepsy and in India, estimated 12 million people reside with epilepsy.
Objectives: The main objectives of the study is to assess the knowledge regarding seizures and its first aid management among staff working in the utility services departments in a selected hospital and to find out the association of knowledge score with the socio-demographic variables
Methods: A non-experimental descriptive research study was conducted among staff working in the utility services departments at Yenepoya Speciality Hospital, Managaluru. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 50 study samples which include housekeeping, orderly nursing staff and security guard. The investigator gathered data using self-prepared semi-structured knowledge questionnaires and an information booklet distributed to the staff working in the utility service department. Gathered data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: The study findings revealed that among 50 samples, 25 (50%) had inadequate knowledge, 19 (38%) had moderate knowledge, 6 (12%) had adequate, and the overall mean with standard deviation was 12.12±7.12 and the mean percentage was 41.75% knowledge regarding seizures and first-aid management of seizures.
Conclusion: The study concluded that majority of 50% participants had inadequate knowledge regarding seizures and first-aid management of seizures. The information booklet was distributed to the staff working in the utility services department of the hospital in order to improve the knowledge and practices regarding seizure and first aid management.
