Introduction: Varicose veins are a common occupational health concern, particularly among nurses working in operation theatres (OT) and intensive care units (ICU), due to prolonged standing. Lack of awareness regarding risk factors and preventive measures contributes to increased incidence and complications. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding varicose veins and its prevention among OT and ICU nurses.
Methodology: A pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was adopted. The study was conducted among 120 staff nurses working in OT and ICU at Tagore Hospital, Jaipur. Non-probability convenient sampling was used. A structured knowledge questionnaire was administered before and after the structured teaching programme. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including mean, standard deviation, paired t-test, and chi-square test.
Results: In the pre-test, 48% of nurses had poor knowledge, 42% had average knowledge, and only 10% had good knowledge. Post-test findings showed a significant improvement, with 85% of nurses attaining good knowledge, 10% of nurses had average knowledge and only 5% remaining in the poor category. The mean knowledge score increased from 16.5 to 26.33, with a significant t-value of 28.39 at p<0.05. Significant associations were found between knowledge scores and demographic variables such as gender, qualification, experience, and prior knowledge.
Conclusion: The structured teaching programme effectively enhanced the nurses' knowledge regarding varicose veins and its prevention. The study supports the inclusion of regular in-service training to promote preventive practices in clinical settings. Although the intervention focused on education rather than clinical treatment methods, the findings highlight the value of awareness. Replicating the study with a larger and more diverse sample is recommended to strengthen generalizability.
