A safe injection is one that does not harm the recipient, does not expose the provider to any avoidable risk, and does not result in any waste that is dangerous to the community. Each day thousands of health worker around the world, suffer accidental occupational exposures during the course of their role of caring for patients.
Aim of the study: To assess theeffectiveness of self-instructional module on knowledge regarding needle stick injury among nursing students.
Methodology: The study used a quasi-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design with 100 nursing students. A self-instructional module on needle stick injury significantly improved knowledge levels, as analyzed using paired t-tests, two-sample t-tests, and Fisher's exact test to explore associations with demographic variables.
Result: The study revealed a significant improvement in nursing students' knowledge about needle stick injuries after the self-instructional module. Pre-test scores showed 25% poor knowledge, 59% average knowledge, and 16% good knowledge, which improved to 4% poor, 54% average, and 42% good knowledge in the post-test. The average score increased from 9.7 to 12.2, with a t-value of 14 and a p-value < 0.05, confirming the module's effectiveness.
Conclusion: The study concluded that the self-instructional module significantly improved nursing students' knowledge about needle stick injuries. Post-test knowledge scores were notably higher than pre-test scores, with a statistically significant increase confirmed by the t-test (t=14, p<0.05). This demonstrates the effectiveness of the intervention in enhancing awareness and understanding of needle stick injury prevention and management.
